What Is Pusoy — and Why Do Filipinos Love It So Much?

Ask any Filipino who grew up around a card table and they'll know Pusoy. It's one of those games that's been passed down across generations — older relatives teaching younger ones the house rules, everyone arguing about whether a certain hand qualifies, and money changing hands over the most dramatic showdowns you've ever seen in someone's living room.

Pusoy (also known as Chinese Poker) is a four-player card game where the full 52-card deck is split evenly, giving each player 13 cards. The goal is to arrange those 13 cards into three separate hands: a back hand of five cards, a middle hand of five cards, and a front hand of three cards. Each hand must be ranked in descending order — the back must be your strongest, middle second strongest, and front the weakest of the three.

At 777jilli, both the classic Pusoy format and the faster Pusoy Dos variant are available. Whether you're a veteran who's played every Christmas season since childhood, or a newer player just discovering the game online, 777jilli has the right table for you. The interface is clean, mobile-friendly, and loads fast even on LTE — no fancy device needed.

What makes Pusoy stand out from other card games is how it rewards careful hand-setting. You have total control over how you arrange your 13 cards — the skill is in figuring out the optimal configuration that beats as many opponents as possible across all three rows simultaneously.

Pusoy Variants at 777jilli

Two flavours of the same great game — classic Pusoy for the traditionalists and Pusoy Dos for players who want faster, higher-energy rounds.

Classic Pusoy (Chinese Poker)

The original format — four players, 13 cards each, arrange them into front (3 cards), middle (5 cards), and back (5 cards) hands. After all players lock in their arrangements, hands are revealed simultaneously and compared one-on-one.

Each player competes against each of the other three players individually. You score a point for every row you win head-to-head, giving a total of three possible points per opponent matchup and up to nine points total per round. If you win all three rows against one opponent, that's a "clean sweep" — usually worth a bonus in most house rules, and at 777jilli this earns extra chips.

Classic Pusoy rewards meticulous hand-setting and careful observation of what your opponents might be building. The best players think several moves ahead, sacrificing strength in one row to dominate two others.

Hand Layout at a Glance
B
Back Hand (5 cards)

Your strongest combination. Must outrank both the middle and front. Typically where you build your best flush, straight, or higher.

M
Middle Hand (5 cards)

Must be stronger than the front but weaker than the back. Often where a pair or two-pair lives.

F
Front Hand (3 cards)

Only three cards, so only pairs and high cards apply here. No straights or flushes count in a three-card row.

Pusoy Dos

Pusoy Dos is a completely different game despite sharing the Pusoy name — and it's the version most younger Filipinos think of first. Each player receives 13 cards, and the goal is to be the first to empty your hand by playing cards in valid combinations to a central pile.

The game starts with the player holding the three of spades (the lowest card in Pusoy Dos). Cards rank from 3 (lowest) all the way up to 2 (highest) — yes, the twos are the most powerful cards in the deck, which is where the "Dos" comes from. Suits rank Spades as the lowest, then Clubs, Hearts, and Diamonds as the highest.

On each turn, you can play a single card, a pair, a triple, or a five-card combination (sequence, flush, full house, four-of-a-kind with kicker, or straight flush). Whatever you play must beat the previous play of the same type. If you can't or don't want to beat it, you pass. Play continues until no one can beat the last played combination — then whoever played last starts a new round from their hand.

Pusoy Dos at 777jilli supports 2–4 players and runs on a points system where remaining cards in hand at the end of the round count against you. First player to empty their hand wins. It's fast, reactive, and absolutely perfect for mobile gaming sessions — you can finish a full game in under 15 minutes.

Open-Face Pusoy

Open-Face Pusoy takes the classic Chinese Poker format and flips the card-setting process on its head. Instead of setting all 13 cards privately and revealing at once, players receive their cards one at a time and must place each card into one of their three rows face-up — with no option to rearrange once a card is placed.

This creates a completely different strategic challenge. You're building your three hands in real time, reacting to the cards you receive round by round, while also watching what your opponents are building. A hand that looked great at the start can fall apart as the cards come in, and knowing when to pivot your strategy mid-build is what separates good Open-Face players from great ones.

There's also the "fouling" risk — if your front ends up stronger than your middle, or your middle ends up stronger than your back, your entire hand is fouled and you automatically lose all matchups for that round regardless of the individual hand strengths. Risk management in OFC is a skill unto itself, and 777jilli's tables let you practice it at low stakes before moving up.

Watch Out for Fouls

Setting your middle hand stronger than your back, or your front stronger than your middle, results in a foul. A fouled hand automatically loses all three rows that round — no exceptions. Double-check your arrangement before locking in at 777jilli.

Pusoy Scoring at 777jilli — How Points Work

Understanding scoring is crucial because it affects how you should set your hands. In classic Pusoy, each row comparison against each opponent is worth points — and special hands earn bonus multipliers.

Situation Points Notes
Win one row +1 Per opponent, per row won
Win all three rows (Sweep) +6 3 base + 3 bonus for clean sweep
Fouled hand −3 Automatic loss of all rows vs. all opponents
Royalties – Three of a Kind (Front) +3 Bonus paid by all opponents regardless of win/loss
Royalties – Straight Flush or better (Back/Middle) +5 Premium hands earn automatic bonuses
Winning all 4 rows vs. same opponent (OFC) +4 Open-Face variant only

Royalty bonuses are paid in chips directly at the start of the next round, separate from the row-comparison scoring. They add up quickly, so building a three-of-a-kind in the front row is almost always worth sacrificing a little strength elsewhere.

Strategy Tips — Set Your Hands Like a Pro

Hand-setting is the core skill in Pusoy. These tips will help you make consistently better decisions at 777jilli's tables.

Prioritise the Back Row First

Start your hand-setting by identifying the best possible 5-card combination in your 13 cards. This is your anchor. Build the middle and front around whatever is left — trying to work backwards from a weak back row usually leads to a weak middle too.

Chase Royalties When Possible

If you can hit a three-of-a-kind in the front row without significantly weakening your other rows, always go for it. The royalty bonus gets paid by all three opponents and is separate from the row comparison — it's essentially free points that compound over a session.

Never Risk a Foul

A fouled hand loses you every row versus every opponent simultaneously. Even if your individual hands are strong, the math never makes it worth the risk to set questionable arrangements. When in doubt, play it safe and accept a middle row loss over a full foul.

Watch What Others Are Building

In Open-Face Pusoy, you can see your opponents' growing hands. If two opponents both seem to be building strong back rows, focus your effort on dominating the front row instead — splitting two wins out of three against multiple opponents adds up more than you'd expect.

Think in Terms of Expected Value

Sometimes the arrangement that wins the most rows against one opponent is different from the one that performs best across all three simultaneously. When you're not sure, run through each arrangement mentally: how many row wins does each configuration produce against a typical opponent hand?

Manage Your Bankroll

Pusoy involves variance — even perfect hand-setting gets beaten by distribution luck sometimes. Stick to tables where the total possible loss per round is under 5% of your session budget. This keeps you in the game long enough for skill to win out over the long run at 777jilli.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about playing Pusoy at 777jilli.

Classic Pusoy (Chinese Poker) is about arranging your 13 cards into three hands and comparing them against opponents at showdown — it's strategic and deliberate. Pusoy Dos is a shedding game where you play cards from your hand onto a pile trying to be first to empty your hand — it's faster and more reactive. Both are at 777jilli, and many Filipino players enjoy switching between them depending on their mood.

A foul occurs when your hand arrangement is invalid — specifically when your front row is stronger than your middle, or your middle is stronger than your back. A fouled hand automatically loses all three rows against all opponents for that round, regardless of the individual hand strengths. You also lose any royalties you might have otherwise earned. It's the most costly mistake in Pusoy, so always double-check before confirming your arrangement at 777jilli.

Yes. 777jilli has free practice tables for both classic Pusoy and Pusoy Dos. You play with virtual chips so there's no financial risk — it's purely for learning the mechanics and developing your hand-setting instincts. Once you feel confident, you can move to real-money tables starting from ₱50 buy-ins.

Royalties are automatic bonus payments triggered by particularly strong hands, regardless of whether you win or lose that row. For example, hitting a three-of-a-kind in the front row earns you a royalty paid by each opponent. A straight flush or better in the back or middle row also earns royalties. These bonuses are settled in chips at the start of the next round — they're in addition to the normal row-comparison scoring.

Most withdrawals via GCash and Maya are processed the same day, typically within a few hours of the request. Bank transfers via InstaPay or PESONet may take up to one business day. The minimum withdrawal amount is ₱200. There are no withdrawal fees charged by 777jilli, though your payment provider may have standard transfer fees.
